Case study 2: new-build house
Pembroke Dock Eco-Houses
The scheme (currently under construction) involves a pair of low-impact urban eco-houses. The project aims to significantly reduce energy use, using a super-insulated compact, semi-detached building form to minimise heat-loss surface areas whilst maximising habitable space. The houses are being constructed from recycled or waste materials wherever possible and feature foundations made from old car tyres filled with compacted sub-base, two-storey load-bearing straw bale walls and a living roof.
The houses are designed to reflect features typical of the area and will look broadly similar in terms of wall thickness, door and window arrangement and finishes to the traditional stone houses nearby. The green roofs are something of a statement and are intended both for visual interest and to replace habitat lost in preparing the site for construction (a large coniferous hedge and lawn were removed during site clearance).
